Reading and Adult Learners of English: What do we need to know?
By Robin Lovrien Schwarz, M. Sp. Ed: LD Ph.D. (Candidate)
Workshop Description:
Reading is just...READING, right? Actually, reading -- especially in a second or other language -- is a lot more than just making sense of letters and words in English. In this workshop, we will first cover some foundational theories and research on the process of reading and then on reading in a second or other language and the notion of transfer. Factors that cause learners to seem to have reading difficulties will be discussed as we go along. One segment of the workshop will focus on the needs of learners with no prior print literacy and how these learners and their needs differ from those who have already achieved literacy, even at a very low level. Finally, we will co-construct a blue print for a reading lesson for you to use at different levels of ESOL. As we build this plan, we will include specific practices that build skills that contribute to better reading.
