The Montgomery County Correctional facility at Boyds, MD is accepting applications for a part-time adult education contract position teaching Pre-GED classes. A qualified applicant will have a bachelor’s degree and two years experience teaching. Experience working with adult learners is a plus. An extremely bright 10th grade girl with very limited English proficiency is trying to take a full 10th grade college prep academic load. She needs intensive ESOL support to be able to keep up with the reading and writing demands required. She will likely need to meet multiple times a week. The IRC is in need of volunteer ESL tutors. As a volunteer in the program, you will visit the house of an individual or family that recently arrived in the U.S. Your role will be to help them with English. This means that, for whatever reason, these students either do not attend classes or they need supplemental help with classes in which they are currently enrolled; you are essentially replacing the ESL classroom. We have clients throughout the Washington Metropolitan Area and are consistently placing people in new areas throughout Prince George's and Montgomery Counties. Specific areas of need right now are in Maryland – Riverdale, Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Hyattsville and Greenbelt. We do our best to ensure that locations are bus/metro accessible.There is no set curriculum for the program but we do have access to many resources online and in hard copy that can enhance your own lesson planning. Our learners vary from preli terate to advanced, intermediate and sometimes fluent learners. The time commitment is a minimum of two hours a week, not including lesson plan preparation time, or travel time. The duration of a tutorship commitment is a minimum of four months. The B-CC PTSA is looking for two English instructors for its English class for speakers of other languages. The class will take place at the Gwendolyn Coffield Center in Silver Spring, every Tuesday and Thursday, 7 to 9 pm for 8 weeks starting on February 22 through April 14.

The Literacy Council of Montgomery County (LCMC) is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to helping adults in Montgomery County learn to speak, read, write and understand English. We have been serving the community for over 40 years. The LCMC is currently looking for part-time ESL teachers to teach ESL to adults in Montgomery County (please see above info). Job Description: Part-Time – three evenings per week, 6 to 9 PM; Germantown, MD (Northwest High School); classes meet Mondays, Tuesdays, & Thursdays, for ten weeks – classes run from early March through mid May, 2011. Part-time teachers for multi-level classes will teach adults with limited English proficiency how to listen, read, write, and speak in English and to learn essential life skills needed in the community. The course contents are based on Maryland standards for adult ESOL learners and CASAS competencies. Instructors will play an active role in developing and adjusting curriculum while working with volunteers. The contract for the classes is for 10 weeks, with a possibility of renewal to teach future classes on an on-going basis. Instructors are paid for training and prep time.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in TESOL, English, applied linguistics, foreign languages or a related field; 2 years of experience teaching ESL to adults; Experience working with learner assessment data; Experience working with standards-based instructional content.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree or a graduate certificate in TESOL, Education, English, applied linguistics or a related field; Familiarity with MD Adult ESOL Content Standards; Experience with standardized language assessment systems (e.g. CASAS, BEST) preferred. Fields Road Elementary School PTA is putting together a class for parents who speak primarily Spanish. We are looking for someone to teach an 8-week course, 1hr. per week in the evening. We will pay the teacher $25/session. The session will be part of a 2 hour workshop. The first hour being teaching English language, and the second hour will be teaching parents how to advocate for their children in and throughout the Montgomery County Public School System.

CASA de Maryland’s primary mission is to work with the community to improve the quality of life and fight for equal treatment and full access to resources and opportunities for low-income Latinos and their families. CASA works with other low-income immigrant communities, makes its programs and activities available to them, and joins with other organizations to advocate for social, political, and economic justice for all low-income communities. The Education Program provides courses in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish literacy, citizenship, and computer literacy for low-income immigrants. Using Popular Education and Traditional Education methodologies to address the educational needs of its students, to provide them with otherwise unavailable educational opportunities.

Type: Hourly employee, less than 19 hour per week. Temporary position with the potential for a contract renewal at the end of the 10-12 week session.

Duties/ Responsibilities: • Create engaging and practical lesson plans for working adults and parents • Teach functional English grammar and conversation skills to adult learners of diverse professional and educational backgrounds • Evaluate student progress by monitoring student work, providing opportunities for conversation and administering quizzes and exams • Record daily attendance • Maintain consistent communication with ESOL instructor(s) of the same course level so as to ensure that all CASA students receive the same high level of language instruction • Participate in periodic teachers meetings and trainings as scheduled • Administer the BEST Plus oral assessment pre and post test at the beginning and end of each semester• Other duties as assigned by the supervisor related to the position
