ROCKVILLE, MD – The Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy (MCAEL) is pleased to announce that Tom Perez, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice and a former Montgomery County Council Member, will be the keynote speaker at the November 15, 2012 “Leaders for Literacy: Transforming People, Families and Communities” a fundraising and community event supporting literacy in Montgomery County. Perez was instrumental in founding MCAEL. County Executive Isiah Leggett will be introducing Mr. Perez and they will be joined at the event by literacy providers including the Literacy Council of Montgomery County, Seneca Creek Community Church and Rockville Seniors, CASA de Maryland, Chinese American Senior Services, Families Foremost Center of the Mental Health Association, and Spanish Catholic Center of Catholic Charities, in order to help raise money for literacy programs, build awareness about the coalition and celebrate the work that is being done to help the 1 in 7 adults in Montgomery County who are limited English proficient.
Literacy is the key tool that allows people to participate in community and achieve their full potential as community members – whether it is to get a job, talk with their child’s teacher, visit a doctor, negotiate the bus system or simply be able to communicate with their neighbors, learning English is the key component to their success.
“The work that MCAEL and its coalition members do is critical to Montgomery County. By building the capacity of over 60 adult English literacy providers and engaging the broader community around the importance of supporting literacy, we continue to create a thriving community and optimal workforce.  We are proud to be affiliated with and to support the coalition.”  Bill Robertson, President & CEO, Adventist HealthCare Inc.
MCAEL thanks the event sponsors:  Adventist HealthCare, Inc., Montgomery College Foundation, The Doris and Sanford Slavin Foundation, Johns Hopkins University, Chipotle, and DarCars Automotive Group.
The Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy (MCAEL) is dedicated to strengthening the county-wide adult English literacy network with resources, training, collaborations and advocacy to support a thriving community and an optimal workforce.  With over 70 coalition member organizations, and over 1,200 instructors, MCAEL coalition participants work daily to help community members gain the skills they need to fully participate in our community.
