Zoom In: Building Foundational Zoom Hosting Skills

for the Adult ESOL Classroom

Registration opens on a rolling basis but limited to 16 participants per session.


Because space is limited, we are prioritizing participation for adult ESOL educators who currently serve or plan to serve learners in Montgomery County, Maryland.

About the Course

This flexible, drop-in series is designed for ESOL instructors who are new to Zoom or want to strengthen their technical hosting skills. Each week features a different focus, so you can join the sessions most relevant to your needs—or attend them all for a more complete learning experience. Each session is hands-on and practical, connecting Zoom tools directly to effective ESOL instruction—so you’re not just learning features, you’re learning how to use them to support your learners.


What to expect:


  • Live, 1-hour Zoom sessions
  • Interactive practice with Zoom features
  • Opportunities to try, reflect, and ask questions
  • The flexibility to attend one session or multiple


Each session is offered twice a week to support your scheduling needs:


  • Tuesdays | 1:00–2:00 pm
  • Thursdays | 5:00–6:00 pm

  • Week 1 - Host Control & Class Management

    Zoom in on the tools that help you open, organize, and guide your Zoom classroom from the moment learners arrive.


    You’ll practice how to:

    • Create and launch a Zoom meeting
    • Admit learners from the Waiting Room
    • Rename participants for clarity
    • Use the Participants panel to stay oriented
    • Mute and unmute learners as needed
    • Remove participants when necessary

  • Week 2 - Screen Sharing

    Zoom in on how you present content so learners can follow, engage, and understand.


    You’ll practice how to:

    • Start and stop screen sharing
    • Share your full screen or a specific window
    • Share browser tabs and audio
    • Use the Zoom whiteboard
    • Share content within breakout rooms

  • Week 3 - Breakout Rooms

    Zoom in on small-group learning and how to make it work smoothly online.


    You’ll practice how to:

    • Set up and launch breakout rooms
    • Assign learners (automatically or manually)
    • Move between rooms to support learning
    • Close rooms and bring everyone back together smoothly

  • Week 4 - Chat & Engagement Tools

    Zoom in on simple tools that help keep learners engaged and participating throughout your lesson.


    You’ll practice how to:

    • Send and respond to chat messages (group and private)
    • Read and manage chat during a lesson
    • Save chat for follow-up or review
    • Use raise hand and reactions
    • Create and launch polls
