Celebrate International Literacy Day - September 8th

International Literacy Day helps bring attention to global literacy. In Montgomery County, close to 125,000 individuals over the age of five are limited English proficient – nearly 14% of our County’s population. In the United States, 30 million adults - 14 percent of the country’s adult population—have only the most minimal ability to read and write in English. Globally, nearly 800 million people over the age of 15 cannot read, write, or perform math calculations.

We all benefit when adults gain the English language and literacy skills needed to transform their lives. Like a golden key, English literacy opens the door to better job opportunities; enables parents to participate in their children’s education and access healthcare for their families; and creates opportunities for our neighbors and colleagues to become more effective, contributing members of the community.

On September 8th, join individuals, organizations, and countries throughout the world as we renew our efforts to promote literacy and demonstrate a commitment to providing education for all.

Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy Announces Appointment of New Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy (MCAEL) announces the appointment of Rachel Glass as Executive Director of the Coalition. Ms. Glass began working at MCAEL on December 2, 2007.

In making the announcement, Dr. Ruth Burgos Sasscer, Chairwoman of the Board, commented “We are delighted to find such a strong candidate to lead this organization at such a critical time in its development, and when the need for expanded services for our providers is so great."

“Ms. Glass’s knowledge of Montgomery County, and her fundraising experience, will be critical to MCAEL as we continue to build on the support we receive from the County and develop strong partnerships with local businesses to improve the literacy skills of the county’s workforce. Under Ms. Glass’s direction, we look forward to continuing to build the capabilities of MCAEL so that we can better support the services of our partner providers, who offer English language and literacy training.”

Rachel Glass comes to MCAEL most recently from the United Way of the National Capital Area, where she was Campaign Director for Montgomery County. At the United Way, Ms. Glass worked actively with local businesses and Montgomery County non-profit partners. She participated in a variety of local collaboratives, including Non-Profit Montgomery!, the Leggett Transition team and the Funders Roundtable of Montgomery County.

Among her community activities, Ms. Glass is a corporate officer of Art and Remembrance, a non-profit dedicated to using the power of art and story to further social justice. Fluent in Spanish, Ms. Glass has worked as a volunteer tutor for FIRN, the Foreign- Born Information and Referral Network, and Education-Based Latino Outreach (EBLO), which worked to improve the lives of Latino youth in the Baltimore area through cultural and educational programs. Ms. Glass, a native of Montgomery County, holds an M.A. in Public Management from the University of Maryland and a B.A. in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University.
